DENVER – The deadline to register a team for the 10th annual Colorado Dragon Boat Festival is May 1.
The two-day festival will take place July 24-25 at Sloan's Lake Park. The entry fee is $850 for adult teams and $550 for youth teams.
There are two distances for racers: 250 meters and 500 meters. The competitive division races are 500 meters, while the youth, recreation and corporate divisions will compete in 250-meter races. Every division will race in a double-elimination bracket.
Similar to last year, teams will race in Hong Kong-style boats. Teams must consist of 20 paddlers with a minimum of eight men and eight women, one steersman and one drummer. A steersman will be provided for all divisions except competitive.
New this year are the additions of challenge races on Sunday afternoon for teams who suffer early elimination. There will be barrel races – teams turn around a barrel in the middle of the course – and backward races, where teams sit backwards and back-paddle down the course.
