DENVER – Only in a pageant can questions about a gal’s current employment and career goals go hand-in-hand with her height, weight, bust, waist and hip measurements.
But fret not, says one pageant organizer, adding that much of the application was simply written in accordance with the national pageant.
Wendy Chao, who is in charge of the Miss Colorado Asian-Pacific American Pageant on May 16, says this year’s event will be different than others, citing a change of venue and better quality than its show last year.
“We want to give the community something a little bit more than last year,” Chao said. “This year is about quality, not quantity.”
The second annual event will be held at the Lakewood Cultural Center and is expecting 10 contestants for the show and another 450 attendees.
Among the upgrades to this year’s show also include better seats, lighting and design, Chao said, to give the women contestants a better experience as well. This year’s show also includes dinner.
“Our goal is training our young women to have confidence, to improve themselves,” she said. “It’s very important.”
Fittingly, the pageant’s website touts the headline, “Our world depends upon the leadership qualities of today’s youth and women.”
The winner will be crowned Miss Colorado Asian-Pacific American and will receive $1,500 as well as paid entry into the Miss Asian American and/or Miss National Asian pageants. First and second runners-up will receive $1,000 and $500, respectively.
Patti To-Diep was the 2008 Miss Colorado Asian-Pacific American Queen.
